Beacon Shine the Light Thursdays: ICE Out of Our Communities!

Join The Beacon for Thursday Shine the Light, as we bring our voices to the street every Thursday from 6:00-6:30 PM.

Each week, we make our voices heard wherever we are. As beacons, we shine light by making a sign and bringing it outside. Don't have a sign? Don't worry! You can borrow one of ours.

Together, we are building visible resistance and organized compassion, meeting our neighbors, and joining together in acts of solidarity. We find joy in resistance through community, music, comedy and street theater.

Across the country, communities are organizing to disentangle local law enforcement from federal immigration enforcement. When local police or sheriffs collaborate with ICE, it undermines trust, separates families, and makes all of us less safe.

Here in Nassau County, Bruce Blakeman has refused to say whether he will comply with the NY State's new law prohibiting local law enforcement from cooperating with I.C.E. Families continue to live in terror of separation, detainment, detention and deportation.

We stand weekly in opposition to this unprecedented assault on the rights, safety, and economic security of people in this country. For 30 minutes every Thursday, we say ICE OUT OF OUR COMMUNITIES and we stand in favor of compassionate democracy and against cruelty, fear and despair.

There are Beacon groups all over the USA. Our local Great Neck group meets every Thursday from 6:00-6:30 pm. We are joined by the Singing Resistance Great Neck to sing songs of solidarity and resistance, old and new.

Our goal is simple and clear: No local resources for ICE. No contracts. No data-sharing. No collaboration.

At this event, we will:

  1. Bring together neighbors, workers, and allies in solidarity

  2. Encourage people to contact local elected officials (or attend a public meeting)

  3. Call on our county legislators to move forward policies that disentangle ICE from local law enforcement

This effort builds on years of organizing led by immigrant communities nationwide — from the fight against 287g contracts to the sanctuary victories that have proven local action works. Cities and states that say NO to ICE are a critical bulwark against mass deportations and the erosion of civil rights.

There is much that we can do locally. And there is much that our elected officials can do — if we demand courage and leadership. Join us!
